Joy Party

Lesson 12

Celebration of learning modeled after a birthday party

Learning Goals

1. I can celebrate what I have learned about Joy.
Preparation:
  1. Identify the venue for the party – a large classroom, hall, or outdoors. Note that children will do some colouring, so they need a hard surface to colour on.
  2. Select music for dancing – either a device with speakers or traditional instruments (Step 5)
  3. Ensure the pupils in the Drama Troupe practice the drama (see Step 10 of Lesson 11: Expressing Joy).
  4. To prepare for the Joyful Action Shake-Up game (Step 8), first cut small pieces of paper – 1 piece per child in your class.
    • Write four joyful actions on about an equal number of pieces of paper. The joyful actions are laugh, jump, shout, and dance. So, for example, if you have 12 pupils in your class, you will write laugh on 3 pieces of paper, jump on 3 pieces of paper, shout on 3 pieces of paper, and dance on 3 pieces of paper. If you have 14 pupils, then write laugh on 3 pieces, jump on 3 pieces, shout on 4 pieces, and dance on 4 pieces.

7 Exchanging Joy Gifts
Explain: At a birthday party, people give gifts to the birthday celebrant to rejoice with them. The birthday celebrant is joyful when she receives a gift, and we are also joyful when we see the joy that we give to the birthday celebrant.

We are now going to make and exchange gifts. I want you to think about the best gift you can imagine. I am going to share a piece of paper to you, and you will draw that gift on the piece of paper. Then we will wrap the gift and exchange them.

Share the Gift Box papers to each child.

Explain and Demonstrate: On one side of the paper, you can see a ribbon. Turn the paper over. Then fold the insides in on the line to the middle of the paper so the ribbon is showing. This is the gift box.

Open the flaps. It is inside where you will draw your picture of the best gift you can imagine. Once you have finished drawing the gift, then you can colour and decorate the gift box.

Share crayons and give pupils time to draw their gifts.

Explain: Now we are going to exchange gifts. If your birthday is in January, stand up.

Arrange the children in partners so they exchange gifts with a partner whose birthday is close to their own. Continue calling months and partnering pupils until everyone has someone to exchange gifts with.

8 Game: Joyful Action Shake-Up

Explain: One thing children do at birthday parties is games. We are going to play a game called Joyful Action Shake-Up. Last week we learned 5 joyful actions. What were they? (Laugh, Joyful shout, Jump for joy, Dance, Tell someone else about your joy.)

To play Joyful Action Shake-Up, we need to arrange ourselves in a circle.

Arrange the pupils in one big circle.

Explain: Next, everybody is going to select a joyful action.

Go around the circle and allow each child to select one piece of paper with a joyful action without looking at the paper. All of the joyful actions should be mixed up.

Ask: Look at the piece of paper that shows your joyful action. How many of you are Laugh? If you have Laugh, raise your hand.

Ask: How many of you are Dance? If you have Dance, raise your hand.

Ask: How many of you are Shout? If you have Shout, raise your hand.

Ask: How many of you are Jump? If you have Jump, raise your hand.

Identify any child who did not raise his/her hand. Help them read the paper with their joyful action on it.

Explain: The joyful action that you have in your hand, that is your joyful action for the entire game. The most important rule in this game is that anytime that joyful action is called, you must respond.

Now, we are going to select one person to be in the centre. The person in the centre is called “It.”

Identify the person whose birthday is closest to the current date. Invite them to the centre of the circle to be It. Take their piece of paper with the joyful action and

Explain: Now that you know what your joyful action is, put your piece of paper down on the ground where you are standing and use a stone to hold it in place.

Guide each child in putting the paper on the ground with a stone on it to hold it in place – including the child in the middle.

Explain: When you are It in the centre of the circle, you will name one joyful action. Anybody who is standing on that joyful action must move from their their spot and find another spot to stand on – including the person in the middle. The person who cannot find another spot then has to go to the middle and be It. Are you ready?

Ask the person in the middle: What joyful action do you want to call?

Once the person in the middle calls out the joyful action, then guide the children on that joyful action to leave their space and find a different one.

Let the next person call out a different joyful action. Repeat the first four rounds with different joyful actions so all children understand how to play. Then let the person in the middle choose any joyful action.

Continue for as long as time allows.
